Padraig’s Biography

Padraig is a member of the footballing O'Connor family from Athlone. His brothers Turlough and Michael also had stellar careers in the League of Ireland. Padraig's career started at St Patrick's Athletic in August of 1970 when, aged 18, he was part of John Colrain's first team squad.

He spent one and a half seasons with the Saints before asking to be released in January 1972. He was allowed to leave by the club board and duly signed for his home town club, Athlone Town, making his debut for the club in a 5-2 home defeat to Finn Harps on 6 February. He then played out the remainder of the 71/72 season at St Mel's.

That Autumn Padraig was back in Dublin when he signed for Bohemians where he went on to win two league titles - 1974/75 & 1977/78 - in his seven years at Dalymount Park. In 1979 he left Bohs to sign back with Athlone Town where his brother Turlough was manager, and in the next six seasons he won another two League titles, in 1980/81 and 1982/83.

In August 1985 he rejoined his first club, St Patrick's Athletic, then managed by his cousin Jimmy Jackson, but his stay with them lasted just one and a half seasons and in December of 1986 he moved on, returning once again to Athlone where Jackson had just been installed as manager.

He played for another three seasons with Athlone, also taking on the role of player/manager in November 1987 following Jackson's departure from the club. Padraig rounded off his career at Bohemians where he signed on as a player in August 1989, but was then appointed player/manager at Dalymount in the wake of Billy Young's departure from the club.
