A first half masterclass from Stephanie Roche inspired Peamount United to a 3-0 win over Cork City Women’s FC at Bishopstown Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The 2019 league champions, who began their season with a 5-0 demolition of Treaty United last weekend, scored their three goals inside the first fifteen minutes.
City were not disheartened as they battled back from the early onslaught to cause serious problems for Peamount who’s experience saw the game through.
It took just three minutes for Peamount to open the scoring as Roche slotted a ball neatly passed City goalkeeper Maria O’Sullivan.
The Republic of Ireland international turned from scorer to creator three minutes later as she teed up Aine O’Gorman to tap the ball cleanly in.
Peamount’s domination was all but complete when O’Gorman beat Nathalie O’Brien, and then crossed it into a crowded penalty area before Eleanor Ryan Doyle volleyed the ball into the bottom left corner.
The near complete performance in the opening fifteen minutes did nothing to deter the energy of City. An energetic Eabha O’Mahony, with the support of Saoirse Noonan, were constantly running at the Peamount back four. With the support of Lauren Egbuloniu, who had her first for the Rebel Army after returning from a lengthy absence, there was never a dull moment for the Peamount back four.
In the second half, O’Sullivan came to the rescue to deny Peamount a fourth with a fantastic hand to palm a shot from Ryan Doyle off of the cross bar.
Laura Shine, who scored two goals on Saturday for City’s u17s in a 3-1 win away to Shelbourne, replaced Egbuloniu who received a roar of encouragement from both sets of fans.
O’Gorman was fantastic as the second half wore on with the finest of margins denying her a second of the game as she whipped a stunning free kick inches wide of the post.
