A Liverpool XI side overcame a UCD team with bigger things on their mind as a sizable crowd packed into the Belfield Bowl for this Sunday evening encounter.
UCD started with an extremely strong team considering the club faces Slovan Bratislava in a must win game on Thursday evening here in Dublin. Despite this it was Liverpool who created the better chances in the opening half an hour with numerous through balls and fast paced action ensuring that the Students were forced to be on their toes at all times.
In terms of the home side, they had their chances as well with Swan and Kirwan having near misses. The recent European goalscorer very unlucky to lose his footing as he went to prod the ball home from just 6 yards out having done all the hard work to get beyond his defender.
Much has been made in recent times of Niall Corbet’s great form in helping UCD advance through to the Second Round of the Europa League, but it was the Student’s second choice shotstopper Conor Mackey who was equally as impressive during this games opening exchanges.
Kirwan and Swan continued to link up well before the latter was replaced on the 32nd minute. Just before he was replaced though UCD went behind as an unfortunate coming together between Adam Harney and Jerome Sinclair saw the ball bounce kindly at the feet of Cameron Brannagan who simply couldn’t miss from six yards out.
A host of changes just after the half hour mark saw the College’s regular stars make way although the high standard and pace of the game didn’t change. Cannon in particular went agonisingly close to getting on the scoresheet while Sinclair was continuing to be a menace leading the Reds attack as we arrived at the half time interval.
It took the visitors from Merseyside just three minutes of the second period to end up doubling their lead and the goal came through the boot of Samed Yesil who knocked it home first time on the volley after a cross from the right hand side of the park.
It took ten minutes for the College to finally settle battle into this friendly fixture but when they did Kirwan really should have scored after a neat lay off from Conor Canon inside the box, however on this occasion Kirwan was swarmed by a raft of Liverpool defenders and the chance was lost.

With Liverpool adopting a system of rolling subs for the final half an hour of the contest it was little surprise that the standard of the football on show decreased rapidly from its first half self.
As the crowd begin to think about heading for the exit with ten minutes to go Yesil and Gomez tried to make them think otherwise with good efforts including the latters shot rebounding away off the woodwork. Down the other end and both Cannon and Belhout were trying to put their side back within a goal of their English counterparts.
Just before the end UCD did grab one back through Samir Belhout as he headed in to punish Liverpool for failing to clear their lines sufficiently.
