The biggest prize in Irish amateur football was today won by Tipperary side St Michael’s , who lifted the FAI Junior Cup for the first time since 1974 after what tuned out to be a well-deserved 4-0 win over Limerick’s Ballynanty Rovers at the Aviva Stadium.
St Michael’s were looking to win their fourth trophy of this season and they started the clash the brighter showing their intent early on. Captain James Walsh headed wide from a corner in the 6th minute.
They went close again after 8 minutes when David Slattery controlled the ball with his chest and tried a spectacular volley which ended up going wide.
Ballynanty started to settle down and get their passing game going. They managed to win a few corners but didn’t test the Saints defence enough in the opening 45 minutes. Alex Purcell out on the wing looked the most lively player for the Limerick side.
Ballynanty’s Alex Purcell went on a decent run and delivered a dangerous low ball into the box but no one succeeded on getting onto the cross.
It was the side from Tipperary who went ahead after 20 minutes when winger Jimmy Carr crossed in from the right and striker Slattery headed in from five yards out. It was a fantastic moment for Slattery, who only signed for St Michael’s this year from Cashel Town.
The 2nd half started slowly, but it was St Michael’s who created the first clear chance. Slattery’s shot was cleared off the line by Ballynanty’s Shane Doran.
There was a delay to proceedings when Ballynanty midfielder Dermot Fitzgerald went off on a stretcher with a bad knee injury on the hour mark.
66th minute in and St Michael’s scored their second goal. Pat Quinn did brilliantly to place the ball into the top corner from a very tight angle with the ball going in off the post.
It was Quinn again who nearly scored again in the 71st minute but the ball got stuck under his feet at the crucial moment.
With ten minutes remaining Jimmy Carr made it 3-0 after a he was played through by Ryan leaving him one on one with the Ballynanty keeper Stephen Mc Namara. Carr comfortably slotted the ball past the keeper.
St Michael’s added a fourth goal when Carr put the ball in the back of the net with a cool finish. At this point, Ballynanty were resigned to defeat, but Damien Conway’s side can hold their heads up high after giving it their all today and throughout the year. But the day well and truly belonged to St Michael’s and for manager Jason Purcell and his squad, all the hard work and effort paid off.
