Reigning Leinster Senior Cup holders Shamrock Rovers progressed to the semi-final of this year’s competition with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Dundalk in Tallaght Stadium on Monday night.
Trevor Croly will be pleased that all his strikers got on the scoresheet with Eamon Zayed and Tommy Stewart getting the goals in the second half following opening period strikes by Karl Sheppard and Mark Quigley.
Both managers named completely different sides from their league fixtures last Friday with several under 19 players picked on both teams. Rovers boss Trevor Croly named the more experienced side but it still contained two under 19 players and a goalkeeper making his competitive debut for the Hoops. Stephen Kenny had two spaces free on his bench as he named only five substitutes.
That additional experience for Rovers told throughout the game and it was 32-year-old Shane Robinson who almost put the Hoops in front on 14 minutes. His shot seemed destined for the top of corner of the net but just went wide. It came on the end of a flowing Rovers move involving Rovers left back Danny Ledwith, Gary McCabe and Tommy Stewart who was the one to lay the ball off to the Rovers captain 30 yards from goal.
Robinson would have been better not getting involved in the next cross as he took one off Mark Quigley's head when Quigley was in a better position to get on the end of Ledwith's left foot cross. At the other end, a mistake by Conor Winn almost handed Dundalk a goal. Winn came for a cross and his punch went straight to Ciaran O'Connor who bent his shot around the pressurising Conor McCormack but just wide of the post on 23 minutes.
Winn made up for his earlier mistake just after the half an hour mark when he got down sharply to save Conor McDonald's shot. By that time Rovers were 1-0 up. The deadlock had been broken on 28 minutes by Karl Sheppard. Quigley had received the ball in the box with his back to goal and he laid it off nicely for Sheppard who didn’t hit the ball cleanly but it did enough to loop into the net for the opener.
Rovers were getting plenty of joy down the wings with Ledwith linking up nicely with Stewart in front of him. On the opposite wing Sheppard supported Quigley excellently and had a number of chances in the first half the first of which was a header cleared by Manuel Kaguako.
The Hoops forced a series of first half corners and it was from the final one of the half in injury time that Rovers doubled their lead. Gary McCabe swung the corner in that was cleared to Ledwith on the edge of the box. He returned the ball into the box with a flat pass that fell to Stewart. He swiped and missed allowing the ball to run to Quigley who diverted the ball past Aaron Shanahan.
Dundalk’s goal came from a very fortuitous route six minutes into the second half as Rovers' Sean Heaney left a back pass short that Winn kicked straight at Ciaran O'Connor who was charging the ball down. The ball hit the Dundalk player and bounced into the empty Rovers goal. Six minutes later though Rovers restored their two goal lead with Eamon Zayed scoring his first goal for the Hoops. Stewart’s cushioned header fell to Zayed who made no mistake with his shot.
It was Stewart who got his own name on the scoresheet next as he got free on the left to fire the ball with his left boot into the Dundalk net on 67 minutes. The remainder of the game failed to produce any more goals but Rovers have Conor Winn to thank for that as he got down from Lilywhites substitute Frances McCaffrey and then Conor McDonald.
