UCD 2 - 2 Peterborough United

Peterborough ended their Irish pre-season tour with a 2-2 draw thanks to a fantastic finish from Nicky Ajose. The result was possibly harsh on UCD who put in a very respectable performance to start their mid-season friendlies. Darren Ferguson will certainly have felt that it was a worthwhile trip coming across the water and staying unbeaten in the process.
It was from UCD’s first attack that the home side went in front through Robbie Creevy after just six minutes. An overhit Sean Russell corner was returned into the box by Daniel Corcoran. A deft Samir Belhout flick set up Robbie Creevy and the UCD midfielder toe poked home from three yards.
The ten minutes after the goal were anything but eventful with the only scare for the UCD defence coming from a bad back pass that forced Mark McGinley to volley clear. Peterborough, playing their second game in two days, were passing the ball well but failing to create many attacking threats.
For UCD’s frontman Daniel Corcoran this game was extremely important following on from the news that the clubs top scorer David McMillian had left to join Sligo Rovers. Unfortunately UCD really struggled to keep the ball in the opening 20 minutes so Corcoran was left chasing shadows.
Shaquille McDonald was beginning to become a nuisance for David O’Connor and Hugh Douglas in the centre of defence with his movement and running off the ball. At just 5 foot 3 inches, McDonald was proving to be a slippery type of player but every time he did touch the ball or get a shot off O’Connor and Douglas put their bodies on the line to keep the score in the home sides' favour.
On the half hour mark former Dundalk winger Daniel Kearns unleashed a stinging volley from the edge of the area but the former Irish U21 international could not keep his shot down as it sailed high and wide over the crossbar.
With ten minutes of the half remaining UCD started to play the sort of football that has won them praise from many pundits and journalists alike. A nice one-two occurred down the left wing between Sean Russell and Daniel Corcoran with the former delivering a nice low cross. Corcoran timed his arrival into the box to perfection but failed to make the all important touch and steer it home.
Kearns, who was causing problems for the UCD defence, slide the perfect pass to McDonald. The exciting youth prospect went tantalizingly close to scoring the equalizer but the ball cannoned back off the post allowing the home captain David O’Connor to clear the ball to safety.
With the changes at half time, an entirely new Peterborough XI and multiple UCD changes, the pace dipped for the start of the second half.
With 53 minutes gone in the game, Dean Clarke latched onto a horrible mistake by Alex Lynch in the Peterborough goal. A back pass from Knight-Percival to Lynch saw the keeper take too long on the ball which gave Dean Clarke the opportunity to slide in and stick the ball into the roof of the net.
The toll of playing two games in two nights was clearly beginning to show on Peterborough as they nearly conceded a third. The ball was cleared from a United corner by James Kavanagh who found Aymen Ben Mohamed. The young winger, who looks like a great prospect for the future, played a fantastic ball across the pitch to Dean Clarke who took too long on the ball in the box and allowed the visitors defence to get a block in and clear the ball.
The away team did however get an opportunity to pull a goal back when Jevanni Brown performed some nice footwork on the edge of the box before shooting a low shot that caused Ger Barron to make his first save fifteen minutes after coming on as a substitute.
With twenty minutes remaining, Peterborough pulled a goal back. A corner was whipped in by Tommy Rowe and his delightful cross was met by the head of Michael Bostwick whose header resulted in Nicholas Adjose steering home from inside the six yard box.
Peterborough began to come more into the game after the goal as Jevani Brown once again tried his look from the edge of the box but his shot sizzled over Ger Barron’s crossbar. Barnett also tried his luck from range as Barron’s goal began to come under siege. The man from Kilkenny was up to the challenge and got down quickly to prevent an equalizer.
With just one minute left on the clock Nicholas Ajose scored the goal of the game. Ajose took one touch on the left side of the box before unleashing a world class lob over Gerard Barron in the UCD goal which gave the substitute keeper no chance.
With the scores levelled referee Rob Harvey brought the pre season friendly to a close as the small number of Peterborough fans headed home in joyful mood.
