Shelbourne kicked off their summer festival of football with a hard fought 1-1 draw against NPower League 1 outfit Peterborough United.
Posh dominated the opening period and were rewarded on 21 minutes when Lee Tomlin’s free kick found the top right hand corner of Niall Burdon’s net.
Shelbourne were starved of chances throughout but did find a breakthrough 13 minutes from time through Glenn Cronin’s penalty, given for a foul on Sean Brennan that had looked outside the area on first viewing.
Shelbourne, looking the fitter side earlier on, created the first opening three minutes in. Brian Shortall’s pass found Mark Leech but he fired high and wide over Joe Day’s goal.
Peterborough responded quickly and just a minute later some good work from Janni Gordon and Lee Tomlin saw the latter pull his shot inches past Niall Burdon’s post.
The Posh almost took the lead 18 minutes in. After good work down the left from Kgosi Nthle, he worked the ball to Janni Gordon but his shot curled just outside Burdon’s post.
Brian Gartland went close for Shels moments later but his header from Robert Bayly’s corner looping over Day’s post.
The Posh did open the scoring on 21 minutes. After a free kick was awarded around 25 yards from goal, the experienced front man Lee Tomlin stepped up to fire the ball over the wall into the top corner, giving Burdon no chance.
Peterborough continued to dominate proceedings in the opening period with Northern Ireland international Grant McCann and young midfielder Jermain Anderson particularly impressing.
Shels struggled to even get onto the ball except for a couple of attempts to get in behind the United defence that Adam Hanlon failed to latch onto.
Even when Shels found space in the 'Boro half, they failed to capitalise. Robert Bayly tried a lob over Day that failed to even reach the six yard box let alone threaten the net.
Peterborough went close to doubling their lead a couple of minutes before the break. A defence splitting run from Tomlin ended with him teeing the ball up for McCann at the edge of the area, but he lofted his shot inches over Burdon’s post.
Peterborough began the second half like they played throughout the first, Nicky Ajose having his effort blocked by Brian Gartland.
Shels did look a little more intense in the opening minutes of the second half, the more attacking impetuous was summed up by a beautifully weighted ball by Bayly which sent Hanlon through but the former Bray winger fired wide with the goal at his mercy.
With countless subs brought on by both sides, the flow of the game was disrupted. Danny Swanson was a shining light though, his attacking runs causing Shelbourne trouble down the left.
Shelbourne created the first clear cut chance of the second period when a one two between Craig Mooney and Lee Murtagh saw the former lay the ball off to Alex Prizeman, he brought a good save out of Bobby Olejink.
Olejnik was called into action twice just two minutes later, first preventing a curling effort from Sean Brennan with an acrobatic save and then stopping Murtagh’s header from the resulting corner.
Murtagh thought he had hit the net on 69 minutes, his shot cleared off the line by Michael Richens.
Shelbourne levelled on 77 minutes, Sean Brennan was adjudged to have been chopped down by Michael Bostwick inside the area and Glenn Cronin stepped up to stroke the penalty home.
Shels almost took the lead eight minutes from time, Brennan’s daisy cutting free kick superbly saved by Olejnik.
Posh went close to getting a winner four minutes from time as Tommy Rowe squared the ball to Tyrone Barnett, but he glazed his shot over Lee Murphy’s crossbar.
That was all either side could muster in the closing stages, as the game finished one goal a-piece.
