Leinster Senior League side Newbridge Town sent Longford Town home with some things to think about when they met in a pre-season friendly at Station Road on Tuesday night. A single goal from Dave O'Riordain settled the affair and, while Longford were the more threatening team, they never showed the sharpness necessary to overturn their first defeat of 2011.
It was the Airtricity League side that started this game the stronger and they created several clear chances before Newbridge had got themselves going. Austin Skelly was left all alone in just the second minute but he headed Jack Morley's free kick over from just six yards out.
Morley had a go himself when another free presented itself in the seventh minute but Craig Hyland in the Newbridge goal got down well to save at the foot of his right hand post. Hyland also did well to parry Aidan Roches' powerful effort from distance but Newbridge had a more fortuitous escape when David Lane deflected a Michael Lee cross inches wide of his own post.
As so often happens when opportunities are passed up, Newbridge took advantage and scored a goal on 14 minutes that will have had Longford boss Tony Cousins holding his head in his hands.
Dean Barrett was the provider, playing O'Riordain into space wide on the left. His speculative shot sailed into the arms of Stephen Conlon who then allowed the ball to bounce from his grasp and loop, agonisingly, over his head and in.
The teams went into the break with Newbridge still ahead athough Longford had plenty of opportunities to score. Skelly let two more golden opportunities pass by, heading a dropping ball over from ten yards, and directing yet another Morley free kick narrowly wide when he was once again given the freedom of Newbridge by the home defence.
But it was at the other end that Cousins will surely be concentrating as lax defending from Chris Deans almost allowed Dean Barrett in on goal shortly before the half time whistle.
Tony Cousins put out an entirely different Longford side in the second half, only Polish midfielder Peter Szcerbowski and Morley surviving. Cathal Brady whizzed about in midfield and Jason Oladele looked immediately threatening wide on the right.
However, without Skelly and Lee Roche to aim at, Longford created less chances in this period. Nor did they have the guile of Mark Salmon to assist them and, while they remained sturdy at the back and solid through midfield, the trade off was a slightly dulled edge, albeit without the same threat of implosion.
Oladele created an opening in the 65th minute with a strong run and cross from the right but Hyland came out of his goal bravely to block at Daniel O'Reilly's feet. Cathal Brady did likewise from the left five minutes later but his low cross sped across the Newbridge goal with no strikers on hand to finish.
But Longford did finish the game strongly. Daniel O'Reilly had a great chance to pull them level but shot into the side netting having pushed the ball wide, past Hyland in the Newbridge goal. And a series of corners had the home side defending somewhat frantically as the final moments ticked away.
But Keith Kearney will not feel lucky that his side came out on top. Overall Longford lacked the kind of penetration and cutting edge that will be required in a month's time when they will face many more resolute back lines.
