Farmer not underestimating Wexford Youths

Cork will be eager to record victory over Wexford Youths on Sunday in Turner’s Cross because as well as the three points on offer, they have yet to defeat John Flood’s team on Leeside.

Cork captain Emma Farmer feels her side’s preparations have been good ahead of the resumption of the Bus Éireann Women’s National League and while she’s hoping for three points, the Aghada girl and her teammates will not be under estimating their opponents on Sunday.

“Wexford are a great team they had a very good season last year and got good results in Cork. We know it was very close between us in the final table last year so we won’t be taking anything for granted. We need to work very hard to get a win on Sunday. They have some quality players in key areas and I think we will need to be on our toes.

“But in saying that our training is going well and there is a great atmosphere at training, so that gives us the belief that we can pick up three points on Sunday.

“We have been playing a few friendlies against boy’s teams from around Cork particularly Tramore Athletic and I think this will really stand to us.

“Those games have been played at a very high pace which is good for our football development as well as strength and fitness. And you have to get your positioning right against the boys and be strong in the tackle so I’ve no doubt that will all be of benefit to us in the long run,” said the 18 year old.

Cork played their last game of last season in Turner’s Cross and drew with Wexford to seal third spot at the expense of their visitors and now the club have made Turner’s Cross their home which is something Farmer is very pleased with.

“It is a great stadium with fantastic facilities for players and spectators and the playing surface is always in great condition. It’s nice to play in a stadium that is also used for the men’s League of Ireland by one of the top clubs in that league,” said the Cork Institute of Technology student.

“As well as being a great pitch to play on I think having the club based their offers a better incentive for people to come out and watch our games because the stadium is very central in the city,” she added.
