Having watched his side get knocked out of the EA Sports Cup by a superior Sligo Rovers team on Monday night, Roddy Collins was in buoyant mood.

Speaking to ExtraTime.ie, the Monaghan United manager was delighted with the shift his players put in.

“I’m not disappointed, I don’t like losing but for the starting eleven we had and the young kids that played I thought it was a great performance, in the second half in particular.

“Unfortunate two own goals but you’re going to get that when you come to Sligo, possibly the best team in the league at the moment, you know.”

Sligo Rovers took the lead through a Conor McMahon own goal in the first half. Substitute Owen Humphrey was an impact sub for Mons and equalised early in the second half. However, it was to get worse for Conor McMahon when he scored a second OG of the night. Ross Gaynor then put the game to bed when he scored a third for Rovers on 79 minutes.

Roddy felt that there were plenty of positives to take from the game, despite the result.

“Sligo were just a better side. We can accept that. I was happy with some of the players. Young Owen Humphrey scoring was a good plus, Paul Whelan getting 90 minutes, Bobby Ryan getting 90 minutes, young kids getting 90 minutes. It was great.”

Mons are currently second bottom in the table, having picked up two points this season from six games. The former Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians boss said that Monaghan will “be grand”. He continued, “No worries, it’s where we are at the end of the season that matters, not after six or seven games.”

United will face bottom side Cork City on Friday evening and Roddy is relishing the challenge.

“It’s going to be difficult. They lost at the weekend so they are going to be absolutely desperate to win. It’s going to be a great battle.”
