Cook not counting Sligo's chicken

After Sligo comprehensively dismantled the challenge of Galway United in Terryland Park last Friday evening 8-0, Paul Cook spoke to Extratime.ie. Matthew Blinkhorn scored a hat-trick in a thoroughly one sided affair in favour of the leaders amid a brace from Eoin Doyle, an own Goal and a goal a-piece for Raffaele Cretaro and Richie Ryan. It was however the early sending off of Eduardo Dusi that sealed the win for the Bit O'Red.

With Galway United in such financial disarray, epitomised by the fresh, amateur faces in the squad at the concession of some of the professional names in recent weeks, Cook was aware that the Dusi sending off prematurely affected the outcome of the contest. The Sligo manager explained, "You have to feel sorry for the opposition. It's not nice for Sean and his players to be on the end of that and you do feel for them. Sometimes it's a little unfair what goes on, but there's nothing I can do about it. The sending off made the game over as a contest and it was generally a case of how many we were going to score."

Despite the ill effects of having a Galway United player dismissed in the first half, Cook's side still had a job to do and to see his team so effectively go about that task understandably elated the manager, "We're playing well at the minute, we've got plenty of confidence, we're moving the ball well and we're getting results but we know that in football things can change quick. At the minute things are going our way and long may it continue but we know it can change, we don't get carried away. We're just trying to play good football and win football games."

Sligo are sitting pretty at the summit of the Airtricity league after going on a run of four consecutive victories since the 0-0 draw against Derry City in the Brandywell. Cook remains focused however in his evaluation of the challenge that rest of the teams still possess, "I think Shamrock Rovers are a fantastic team, there's no way that they're going to fall away. I think Derry are the same, St Pats are the same, Dundalk can go on a run, Bohemians are really strong. I think any team that wants to win the league has to win the league, I don't think you can be looking to people to do you favours, we certainly won't."

On the prospect of winning the Airtricity Legue Cook was quick to render the outcome as simple mathematics. "No not confident at all ( on winning the league), I'm confident we'll play good football and we'll win games. I wouldn't dare make aspirations about what we're going to do. When the seasons over we'll have amassed an amount of points, whether that will be good enough or not we'll have to see."

Sligo Rovers next host Saint Patrick Athletic at the Showgrounds on Saturday evening (KO.19.45).
