Brennan's Euro goal delight

Well used to the ups and downs of European competition having trawled the continent with Derry City in their UEFA endeavours of 2006 and last year having been part of the heartbreaking Bohemians defeat to Red Bull Salzburg, Killian Brennan knows a thing or two about taking your chances when they come along. Speaking in the wake of last night’s victory over The New Saints, the Drogheda native was happy with his decisive contribution.

“Obviously delighted to get the goal.” stated Brennan at Dalymount. “ We played really well, I suppose they had most of the possession in the first half and they looked a decent side, passed it about pretty well and obviously to get that goal on the breakthrough was joyous for us and obviously the fans as well. We probably could have gone on to win three or four nil but it wasn’t to be and we’ll take a one nil lead going over there next week.”

TNS were immediately at a disadvantage playing such an important game in what is effectively their pre-season. Their manager on the night Mike Davies was taking charge of his first competitive game and their tough predicament wasn’t lost on Brennan. “Obviously them not back in their league and fitness probably paid a factor at the end of the game so that’s pretty disappointing we didn’t put it to bed but we know they’re a good side and we’re not going to take anything for granted going over there.”

A busy week for Bohemians with a glamour friendly to come on Saturday against Mick McCarthy’s Wolves’ side. Before that, on Friday the Gypsies host Sligo Rovers in the league. The Bit O’Red no doubt buoyed by their last gasp victory over UCD on Tuesday night. “We have to keep plugging at the league, we can’t forget about that either you know.” stated Brennan. “I think we’re four or five points behind now [five points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers with two games in hand] and obviously every game is important and every three points is [important] but obviously we’ll kick on in the league and kick on in Europe and hopefully win as many games as we can.”

Bohs’ boss Pat Fenlon stated in the build up to last night’s encounter that a clean sheet was all important before heading out to Shropshire next week for the return leg. He got his wish and Brennan echoed the importance of that stat. “Not conceding is a brilliant thing for us, going over there and maybe just needing a draw to go through is pretty important as well but it’s not all said and done; we only got a one nil lead going over there so we can’t take anything for granted so we’re going to have to go out and try and win the game. We’re not going to go out and play for a draw because it’ll go to extra-time then-if they nick a goal and we don’t score so we’ll be going over to win the leg,” stated Brennan from under Dalymount’s Jody Stand.
