Sloppiness costly for Tribesmen

HIS SIDE had just suffered its first loss for the season and still, six rounds into the competition, it was tough to tell whether Galway United boss Ian Foster was putting on a brave face or being realistic.

They lost out to Bohemians 2-0 at Terryland Park on a wet and windy Tuesday night, two soft goals spelling the difference in a game where skill was never going to shine through.

“You’ve got to take each game on its merits and we actually played some decent stuff tonight,” Foster said.

“Unfortunately we gave the champions two goals and you can’t really gift any team in this league two goals, never mind the champions who keep the ball. But I was actually pleased with the performance, they were just two sloppy goals.”

Six rounds in and the season has been serving up result curve balls on a weekly basis. This is not to say Bohs would not have been favoured to take the win, but the table remains somewhat of a log jam in the opening rounds.

“Teams are taking points off each other, it’s a very difficult division to stay in and pick up points,” Foster said.

“We’re confident we are in a bit of form and we’re confident we can pick up points. The lads have targets to reach for every nine games, we haven’t quite got to ours yet, but we still have three games in this round to go and I’m confident we can get there.”

Teams have a turnaround of just three days before their next round of games in a hectic week of soccer, but Foster admonishes any suggestion that his side cannot handle the busy schedule and in fact, believes it could be prime pickings for his youthful squad – the youngest on average in the division.

“Tiredness doesn’t creep into it at all. We’re a fit bunch of lads, we’re young boys,” he said. “If these lads want to progress and play, particularly over the water, then you’re looking at games Saturday, Tuesday – that’s no excuse whatsoever. There’s plenty of rest time between Friday and tonight, that doesn’t come into it at all.”

They play last-placed Drogheda on Friday and it will be an interesting test of how the young team responds to its first loss of the season.

“It’s disappointing to lose any game, but we’ve got to bounce back straight away,” Foster said. “We’ll be training Thursday, the camp will be buzzing again and we’ll be looking forward to Friday night’s trip to Drogheda .”
