Limerick FC have unveiled Pat Scully as their new manager. The former Shamrock Rovers boss succeeds Mike Kerley who resigned at the end of last month.

Scully attended Limerick's clash with Athlone Town on Friday night in Jackman Park, sparking rumours that the Dubliner was set to take up the reigns at the club.

His first match in charge will be the visit to face First Division table-toppers Shelbourne at Tolka Park on Friday night (8pm). Limerick have take four points from their opening three games of the season leaving them in sixth position in the league.

Speaking about his new challenge, Scully said: "Having met the board, I was very impressed by their plans for the future and I look forward to playing my part as manager in the future success of the club."

A delighted Jack McCarthy, Limerick FC's owner and chairman, said: "We are fortunate to bring on board a manager with Pat's expertise and experience. We are really looking forward to working with him and him working with our young squad."

Club chief executive Andrew Mawhinney echoed Jack McCarthy's sentiments: "We are delighted to have signed someone with Pat Scully's calibre and ambition."

As a player, Pat Scully won the 1988 FA Youth Cup with Arsenal and after loan spells at Preston North End and Northampton Town he moved to Southend United in 1991 before moving to Huddersfield Town in 1994. In 1996 Scully joined Shelbourne who he captained to a league title before signing for Shamrock Rovers in 2001.

He began his managerial career with Kilkenny City in 2005, before taking over at Shamrock Rovers in 2006 and leading them to the First Division title in his first season in charge. Scully departed Rovers last October by mutual consent.
