Wexford Youths got their defence of the Continental Tyres Women’s National League off to a dream start when they defeated Peamount United by eight goals to nil in Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday evening.
With the sides clashing for the second time in three weeks after Youth ran out victorious in the WFAI Cup semi-final, it was the home side who began brightest and they took the lead through Claire O’Riordan who recently received her first Ireland Women’s National Team call up for the European Championship qualifier in Portugal.
Kylie Murphy doubled Youths advantage, before O’Riordan grabbed her second of the game before the break. Emma Hansberry was the next Youths player to get onto the score sheet when she calmly slotted home after a great run.
With the home side in complete control, O’Riordan bagged her hat-trick before Rianna Jarrett, who was making her first appearance since ACL surgery got onto the scoresheet five minutes after her introduction.
Despite missing for a prolonged period of time, Jarrett showed she wasn’t in mood to hang around and the forward soon after grabbing her second of the game before Carol Breen completed the scoring for the hosts who head into next week's FAI Cup final on the back of six straight victories in all competitions since exiting the UEFA Women’s Champions League at the qualifying stage.
