Shamrock Rovers will have to earn their progress into the next round by getting a result against Progres Niederkorn in Tallaght next week after their 0-0 draw in Luxembourg on Tuesday. At times the League of Ireland side made heavy weather of their Europa League First Qualifying Round first leg with the Hoops being made work hard in the 30 degree heat against Progres in Oberkorn's Municipal Stadium.
Pat Felon's men did have chances to win the tie but couldn't find that all important away goal. His team began the game strongly and created the better chances in the first half certainly, but required goalkeeper Craig Hyland to pull off a couple of high quality saves to keep the clean sheet to take back to Tallaght.
Five minutes into the game, Rovers Simon Madden got up the right wing to serve Marty Waters whose header went just wide of goal. Mikey Drennan, who is currently serving a domestic suspension, started up front and he earned the Hoops an early corner off a Brandon Miele centre which Rovers couldn't convert.
The pair linked up again on 15 minutes, almost earning Rovers the opener. With a one-two from Miele, the goal opened up for Drennan whose shot clipped the bottom of the post. Gavin Brennan's back post header had the Progres defence scrambling in the box before another Drennan shot on 20 minutes was required to be turned around the post for a corner by goalkeeper Fabiano Castellani.
Gary McCabe danced past two Progres players in the Rovers box but pulled his shot wide when he had maybe more time to pick his spot.
The 200 or so Hoops fans in the ground in Oberkorn were certainly happy with that start but the home side began to come into the game around the half hour mark. Any break in play, saw water bottles being thrown onto the pitch as both sets of players looked to re-hydrate when they could.
Some loose passes from the Rovers midfield, unexpectantly from Rovers captain Pat Cregg, handed the Luxembourg side some opportunities and they began to pick up some momentum. A Hakim Menai shot hit the side netting though without troubling Craig Hyland.
Just before the break, Drennan got another sight of goal off a Miele header but it was the home team who ended the half strongest. Giuseppe Rossini lobbed Craig Hyland from outside the box. His effort looked destined for the net but dipped to hit the bottom of the post before going wide. In injury time, Rossini's header was then saved by Hyland as he kept things level at the break.
Progres began the second half strongly and Hyland pulled off a fine save from Valentin Poinsignon's header early in the half. The Hoops were handed a corner when the centre defenders Samuel Dog and Ismael Bouzid both went up for a header under no Rovers pressure. McCabe's centre caused confusion but was cleared by Progres.
With Keith Fahey and Stephen McPhail out injured, Pat Fenlon brought on Dylan Kavanagh and Cian Kavanagh to bring fresh and young legs into the game in the closing period. They upped the tempo as the shadows lengthened across the pitch bringing some welcome shade to the players on the pitch.
Sebastian Thill forced Hyland to go full length to his left to keep his clean sheet tipping the ball around for a corner. He followed that up with a shot on 79 minutes that missed by a distance just avoiding the railway line behind Hyland's goal. Dylan Kavanagh's pressure forced Progres to concede a corner late in the game but the Hoops couldn't find a goal at the death.
It will be a tough task for Progres back in Tallaght as League of Ireland sides have yet to be defeated by Luxembourg opposition – with five wins for Irish clubs from the seven matches to date - but they know a score draw will take the team from the Grand Duchy through.
Rovers brought forward and have played their game against Derry City which was originally fixed for this Friday. This means they will have a full week to prepare solely for the second leg against Progres giving themselves every chance of progressing to play against either FC Sherriff from Moldova or Odds from Norway in the next round.
