Martin’s Biography

Martin played underage football with CYM and had trials at Wolverhampton Wanderers before beginning an epic League of Ireland career in January 1975 when he scored on his senior debut for Home Farm, aged just sixteen, in a 3-2 defeat by Finn Harps.

That Home Farm team, managed by Dave Bacuzzi, won the FAI Cup that season with Martin playing a key role but in December of that year he left the Farm to sign for Billy Bingham at Everton. He spent five years at Goodison Park but never settled and failed to make a senior appearance.

He returned to Home Farm on loan at the start of the 1978/79 season and played with them until January 1979 when he returned to Everton. A cruciate injury in a reserves match further dented Martin's progress with the Toffees and he returned permanently to Home Farm in February 1980.

His third spell at Home Farm ended after almost a year when he signed for Drogheda United in December 1980. He spent three and a half season with the Drogs, winning the League Cup in 1983/84 but his time there ended on a disappointing note when a car crash ruled out of the final weeks of that season. In the summer of 1984 he signed for Dundalk.

Martin spent six seasons at Dundalk, winning two League Cup winners medals and also claiming a League and FAI Cup double in 1987/88. He scored eighteen goals in 147 appearances for the Lilywhites and left the club in the summer of 1990, choosing to drop into the Leinster Senior League with Ashtown Villa.

In January 1991 he was back in League football, having joined St Patrick's Athletic where he played out the rest of that season. Aged 32, Martin signed for Irish League side Crusaders that summer and enjoyed another seven seasons before quitting as a player in at the end of 1997 when a career-long heart problem finally required surgery.
