Roddy’s Biography

Roddy began his career with Bohemians and made his senior debut in August 1979 and over the next seven years he played for five different clubs; Bohemians (twice), Home Farm, Athlone Town, Drogheda United and Dundalk.

In January 1986 Roddy made the move to England when he signed for Mansfield Town. He also played for Newport County and Cheltenham Town before returning to Ireland in 1988 to join Shamrock Rovers.

After a year with Rovers Roddy had stints at Dundalk and Sligo Rovers before moving north of the border to play for Glentoran in the Irish League in 1991. His spell at The Oval was brief and he soon moved on to another Belfast club, Crusaders where he played for three years. He also played for Bangor and Cliftonville before returning south in 1995.

In the last two years of Roddy's playing career he turned out for Bohemians, Home Farm, Larne and St Francis, after which he embarked on an extensive career in management.

His first managerial appointment was at Irish League side, Bangor, but in October 1998 he took over from Joe McGrath at Bohemians. He led the Gypsies to the FAI Cup final in 99/00 where they were beaten by Shelbourne after a replay. The following year he famously landed the League and Cup double before being controversially sacked.

2001/02 saw Roddy take over at English side Carlisle United, a period that lasted for just over two seasons, ending in the sack in September 2003. In July 2004 Roddy took over at Dublin City following the departure of John Gill, and in November of the same year he left the Vikings to take over at Shamrock Rovers.

Roddy's time at Rovers was not a happy one, ending in relegation at the end of the 2005 season and an unfair dismissal case after the club dispensed with his services. His next management job was in Malta when he took over at Floriana in June 2009. His tenure at the club lasted less than six months and in December '09 he was appointed manager at Cork City.

However, in February 2010 City were wound up and Roddy's job went with them. It was not until March 2011 that he got back into a dugout, taking on the manager's job at Monaghan United. He got them promoted in his first season there and was in charge at Monaghan for a year and a half, until the club withdrew from the League citing financial pressures.

His next port of call was Athlone Town and he won the First Division title in 2013, his first season with them. He spent the first half of 2014 in charge at Derry City but left in May of that year, next turning up at Waterford United in 2015.

His year and a half long spell at the RSC ended just before the 2016 season ended and the following year he had another brief spell in charge at Athlone Town which ended in February 2018.
