Jay is a creative midfielder who developed at St Joseph's Boys and Home Farm before signing for Bray Wanderers in 2006. He made his league debut at home to Longford Town in September '06 and went on to make 35 league appearances for the 'Seagulls', scoring twice, over the next year and a half.

In December 2007 he signed for Galway United where he made his club debut in a 1-0 defeat to Bohemians on the opening night of the 2008 season. He went on to make 48 league appearances for the Tribesmen, scoring 11 goals, before moving to English side Birmingham City in August 2009. Loan spells at Middlesborough, Stevenage and Port Vale followed before Jay signed a permanent deal at MK Dons in July 2011.

In November 2012 Jay went on loan to Chesterfield where he signed a permanent deal in January 2013.
