Live Updates for Longford Town -v- Mervue United

Updates by

90' + 3'

U2's rather forgettable offering 'Stuck in a moment' is blaring out over the tannoy and is a fitting way to end the day. Some instances of note. Keith Gillespie was reportedly unhappy over something that was said to him as he was coming off. He was seen remonstrating with Johnny Glynn over something one of his players may have said. And the Mervue backroom team were furious about the O'Sullivan's goal not being ruled out for offside. For Longford Town, it marked one of their least impressive displays of the season as the Galway side played the tidier football throughout. This is Conor Neville signing off for Extra-time.ie

90' + 3'

With that moment of drama at the end, the ref brings down the curtain on this dreary affair. The small crowd managed to rustle up some healthily audible boos at the end.

90' + 3'

FULL TIME!

The game has ended between Longford Town and Mervue United.

90' + 2'

GLORIOUS CHANCE. David O'Sullivan headed the ball goalward. Gleeson was flatfooted but Walshe scramble dto clear it off the line

90' + 1'

After the corner was initially cleared, Etanda Nkololo hit a rasper which the keeper had to work to parry

90' + 1'

Josh O'Hanlon has forced a corner after a marauding run down the right wing

89'

Willie Tyrell is booked for a wildish attempt to tackle Lavelle

89'

Yellow Card

Willie Tyrell is booked for Longford Town.

87'

More head tennis

86'

Substitution

Gavin Doyle replaces Keith Gillespie for Longford Town.

85'

The ball has spent an inordiante amount of time in the clouds in the last few minutes, as it bounces aimlessly between both sets of central defences. "It's hard to believe its a top of the table clash" is the word. The smallness of the crowd means individual catcalls are echoing like screams in a swimming pool. Mervue launch the ball into the Longford box but it drifts wide.

81'

The slack atmosphere has infected the home side as they look devoid of ideas.

80'

Substitution

David O'Neill replaces Daniel Purdy for Longford Town.

79'

Chris Deans' long ball almost gets O'Sullivan and Shaw away but the centre-half cuts it out

77'

Both teams tiring somewhat. Mervue attempt to rustle up a chance down the left wing but they fail to get the ball even as far as the box

75'

Daniel Purdy just struck a shot from the edge of the box in the fashion of Ronald Koeman v Ireland in 1988. Banged it into the ground about a yard from his foot with oodles off spin. Unfortunately, there was no Wim Kieft on hand to nod it goalward and it scittered wide

69'

Longford's play has grown more direct as they attempt to manufacture something. The attendence officially cleared the 300 barrier after much discussion in the press box. Officially announced at 319.

67'

CLOSE!! Super long range effort from Gillespie from thirty yards. Caught it perfectly on the volley. The ball dipped but just failed to dip under the crossbar

65'

The yellow cards are coming thick and fast. In quick succession,  both Keith Gillespie and Josh O'Hanlon go into the book for Longford Town

64'

Yellow Card

Josh O'Hanlon is booked for Longford Town.

63'

Yellow Card

Keith Gillespie is booked for Longford Town.

61'

The free kick was dreadful and failed to clear the first man. Crowd getting antsy about such ineptitude in the attacking department

60'

Yellow Card

Noel Varley is booked for Mervue United.

60'

More productive from Nkololo. He rounds his man and is haled down earning a free in a dangerous position for Longford

59'

Etanda Nkololo incurs the wrath of the Town supporters after coursing down the wing, instead of crossing, he ;let the ball dribble over the end line. Scampering down dead ends is something of a specialisty of his

58'

Substitution

Josh O'Hanlon replaces Gary Shaw for Longford Town.

57'

Johnny Glynn's side have controlled possession since the goal and may sense that the home side are there for the taking.

55'

Jason Molloy has rifled home an equiliser after his initial shot was blocked. Mervue were well worth that goal. Irritation widespread among Town supporters. "Sure, the keeper just stood there looking at it!"

55'

GOAL!

Jason Molloy scores for Mervue United.

53'

Longford attempt to string a few passes together but advance little, the ball is transferred back to Chris Deans, who under no pressure, and just inside the Mervue half, slices the ball appalling into the stand

52'

Corner is looped to the back post but is bundled clear

51'

Noel Varley, in the Mervue midfield, played an enticing through ball which almost sent Tom Kenny through, and Longford Town were happy to concede the corner.

49'

Etanda 'Ethan' Nkololo embarks on a tasty run down the wing, feinting and shimmying before lofting a nice ball into the box but the Mervue rearguard deals with it well

47'

Mervue back four looks uncomfortable in dealing with Longford Town raining high balls in them. O'Sullivan looks permanently menacing working off the shoulder of the last defender

46'

The Town restarted the second half with one of those excessively attacking kick offs where the ball is sprayed wide to a winger who has made a darting run. Didn't quite come off, whatever it was...

46'

Second Half

The second half between Longford Town and Mervue United has started.

45' + 1'

The tannoy is currently playing Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl. I can't think of no snide reference to make in relaton to that. The Town side are back on the pitch. Mervue yards behind them. The lads in bibs have to vacate the playing surface.

45' + 1'

The attendence is peculated to be in the region of 200. Much tut-tutting from the press box

45' + 1'

Roy Orbison's 'Only the Lonely' is pumping out. I don't know if that's an reference to the crowd...

45' + 1'

The teams troopin at half-time. Mervue shaded it in terms of possession but Longford produced the better chances from their rare forays into Mervue's final third

45' + 1'

The teams troopin at half-time. Mervue shaded it in terms of possession but Longford produced the better chances from their rare forays into Mervue's final third

45' + 1'

Half Time

It is half-time between Longford Town and Mervue United.

45' + 1'

Confusion reigned in Town defence as Bennion and Tyrell unsure of who's in control. Tyrell opts to head out for a corner. Bennion failing to communicate

42'

An outbreak of tidy play from Mervue with the excellent Lavelle to the for. Mervue prove they can pass the ball in the opening half.

40'

O'Sullivan outmuscles/pushes in the back the Mervue centre-half, steadies, opts not to use Nkololo out wide, unleashes a decent shot on the half volley thirty yards out which Gleeson collects relatively comfortably

39'

Neither side have managed tro carve open anything in the last few minutes. A series of  misplaced long passes

33'

Daniel Purdy hits a ball which asked far too much even of the electric O'Sullivan. Crowd voice their displeasure. "What do you think he is, a greyhound?"

31'

Brian Clough once said "If God wanted us to play football in the clouds he'd have put grass there" He'd have found the last couple of minutes hard to stomach as remarkably long bout of head tennis is followed by a couple of ungainly looking skyed clearances from both Longford Town and Mervue full backs

30'

Purdy has just sent in an inviting cross but there was no Longford player at the back post

28'

Gary Shaw has just swivelled and hit a shot ffrom just inside the box. Gleeson was sprawling to get to it and hadn't it covered but the shot just cleared the crossbar. Close one

25'

Some extremely neat, intricate passing from Mervue sent Lavelle down the endline only for Brian McCarthy to slide in and clear the danger.

24'

Conor Gleeson's policy of punching corners has not found favour in the press box. He flaps at somewhat, but the referee eases the pressure by giving a free for over-zealous hassling of the keeper

22'

David O'Sullivan's pressuring of the Mervue defence has forced them into conceding the corner

21'

Martin Conneelly, presumably after shipping some sort of injury, has made way for Gary Kelly

20'

Substitution

Gary Kelly replaces Martin Conneely for Mervue United.

16'

The game has brightened up in the last 6 or 7 minutes after tedious opening. Mervue are unfortunate to be behind having been the more enterprising side thus far. The in-form O'Sullivan took his chance superbly, however. Gillespie hooked the ball back into danger after Mervue had cleared their lines and O'Sullivan found himself in reams of space on the edge of the box, waited for it to bounce, before looping a header over  the floundering Gleeson. Gary Shaw has just forced a corner after getting to the endline

14'

Mervue have responded strongly, with Lavelle trickery and firm shot forcing a save from Chris Bennion

12'

David O'Sullivan has put Longford in front with a looping header after a long ball from the busy Gillespie

12'

GOAL!

David O'Sullivan scores for Longford Town.

9'

Longford's first sortie into the final third sees Keith Gillespie hit a powerful shot which is confidently taken by Mervue stopper Gleeson. The chants of "The Longford, The Longford' are belted out from the stand for the first time

7'

Mervue doing all the prompting at this point without creating anything of note.

5'

Mervue centre-half Gary Curran has just gone down after a clash of heads. Game a very stop-start affair in the opening moments. Those in the press box still muttering about the poor crowd for a "top of the table clash"

3'

The crowd is disappointingly small at present though there are still a few dribbling in. Mervue United, in impressive form this season, have monopolised position in the opening moments. Noel Varley has just sent a shot whistling past the post

1'

The game between Longford Town and Mervue United has kicked off.
