Trapattoni names team to play Hungary

Giovanni Trapattoni has named the Republic of Ireland team to play Hungary in the final warm-up game in Budapest on Monday evening and as expected barring any injuries will be the side that take to the field in Poznan next Sunday.

Aiden McGeady has beaten off stiff competition from James McClean to take his position on the wing while John O’Shea will get an opportunity to quash any injury worries as he starts at right back. The Sunderland defender has been the main fitness concern during the Boys in Green’s training camp in Montecatini during the week but now seems to have overcome an ankle problem.

Shay Given was another fitness concern worrying Trapattoni and after getting the all clear on a knee complaint, the shot stopper sat out training yesterday due to blisters on his feet but takes his place between the posts in preparation for Euro 2012.

Richard Dunne, Sean St Ledger and former Bohs left back Stephen Ward make up the backline while Keith Andrews comes back into the midfield after being left out of last week’s friendly with Bosnia. Kevin Doyle has been given the nod alongside skipper Robbie Keane in attack which means last week’s match winner Shane Long has to settle for a place on the bench. The Italian master mind has plenty of options up front with Jonathan Walters and West Brom’s Simon Cox also waiting in the wings and 25 year old Cox told reporters yesterday that he is desperate to feature at some point during the tournament. "I just want to get some game-time, that's it. I want to show what I can do. "Hopefully by doing what I did the other day. Scoring goals and putting in decent performances, that's how I show what I can do."

The squad landed in Budapest on Sunday afternoon and are due to train in the Hungarian capital later this evening ahead of Monday’s friendly. The 73 year old is expected to name his substitutes bench 90 minutes before kick off with the likes of McClean, Walters, Long and Gibson all likely to feature at some stage.

There was much speculation among the media that the side Il Trap named for the friendly at the Puskás Ferenc Stadium would be the XI that will take on Croatia in Poznan and it seems likely that that is the case.

Hungary come into the game off the back of a 2-1 victory over Czech Republic on Friday but are likely to field a few of their younger players as they prepare for September’s World Cup qualifiers. Bolton’s Adam Bogdan is expected to start in goal but QPR’s Ajos Buzsaky will miss out due to injury. The game kicks off at 7.30pm Irish time.
