Fahey withdraws from Euro squad

Keith Fahey has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad for the European Championships due to a groin injury with Paul Green called up to replace the Birmingham midfielder in Giovanni Trapattoni’s 23 man squad.
Fahey has failed to recover from a persistent groin injury and the FAI confirmed the news shortly after Ireland’s 1-0 victory over Bosnia on Saturday. "During the warm-ups at today's match, Keith Fahey felt something not quite right. He was scanned following the match", the FAI confirmed.
"The FAI medical team have just received the results of the scan which showed unfortunately that his groin strain was persisting. The results were discussed with the player and he agreed that would not recover fully in time for Euro 2012.
"As a result, he is departing from the squad and Paul Green is being called in. Giovanni Trapattoni spoke to the player, who is very disappointed to miss out on Euro 2012, and told him that he remains part of his plans for the future."
The 29-year-old has been capped 15 times and scored Ireland’s opening goal of their Euro 2012 qualification in Armenia. The former St. Patrick’s Athletic midfielder made his debut in June 2010 at the RDS in a friendly victory over Paraguay and was preparing for his first major tournament.
Currently unattached midfielder Paul Green has been announced as Fahey’s replacement for Poland/Ukraine. He will link up with the squad ahead of their training camp in Italy.
