Goal delight for Hoops' Sheppard

Karl Sheppard, once a crowd favourite at Terryland Park, returned with Shamrock Rovers on Friday evening to compound the relegation worries of Galway United with the winning goal.

There were no hints of mixed feeling for the former United player though, as he was understandably delighted with his contribution to yet another win for the league leaders. Sheppard explains “I am buzzing it is always nice to get a goal even if it is against my old club in Galway, but it was a good three points, and it was a good professional performance from us".

Both teams were playing to opposite ends on Friday night, Galway for their Airtricity league survival and Rovers, with the intention of claiming their second Airtricity League title in as many years. A difference in goals articulated by Sheppard, “It is a different experience playing for Rovers. Last year with Galway we were going into games hoping to win them, but with Rovers we go in expecting to win so it is different but it is one that I am enjoying."

Sean Connor has to avail of all his managerial capabilities to get the most out of his young squad, not least because of a casualty list that seems to get longer with every playing week. Shaun Maher and Bobby Ryan both left the field of play last Friday with injuries.

Sheppard testifies to Connor's managerial skills however, and notes the United managers contribution to his career while also enjoying his time under Michael O'Neill at Rovers and expects to flourish given the tutelage he has amassed from both men, “I was under a good coach last year in Sean Connor and I got a lot of experience. I am still only 20 so I am expecting to go from strength to strength really. I have worked a lot under Michael now and he is bringing more things into my game like getting into the box more and more so hopefully I will score a lot more goals.”

Shamrock Rovers sit pretty at the top if the league after nine encounters thus far and Sheppard is content with the accumulation of points so far, “We have taken 20 points from the first quarter and if we do that from every one we would have 80 points overall, and that is usually enough to win the League any year."
