Glynn pleased despite home defeat

Johnny Glynn was full of praise for his Mervue United charges following their narrow defeat to Shelbourne on Friday night, but conceded that some simple aspects of the game will have to be improved on if they are to reach the benchmark that Shelbourne, who have a 100% record thus far, have set.

“We didn’t defend either goal very well, some things to work on there. Overall I’m reasonably happy, we created more chances than Shelbourne, which gives us something to improve on.”

Having been beaten in some of their previous outing against the Dublin team, Glynn had only good words to say about the quality benchmark the Dublin outfit bring to the division. “Shelbourne are always going to be strong. It’s great for us to play teams like that, it gives us a benchmark”.

“We have areas to work on, if we didn’t where would that leave us? Every team has areas to work on, especially after a defeat. We now need to look at improving for Monday night [EA Cup v Finn Harps]”. Having conceded the second goal came from a set piece, Glynn said: “Fifty per cent of goals conceded from set pieces, we’ve certainly work to do there”.

David Goldbey returned to action on Friday night following an injury picked up on the first outing in the campaign, a return that pleased manager Johnny Glynn. “Didn’t think I’d see him (Goldbey) for ten days, it shows you the character that he has. He showed some great stuff for us tonight, he made a big contribution.”

Glynn also took positives from his recent touchline suspension. “I’ve learnt a bit while I’ve been away from it. At halftime we were watching the goals, I can see it from a different angle. Maybe it’s good to be distanced from it. You can look at the war as opposed to the battle”.
