Drogheda United’s plan for bouncing back to the Premier Division have been dealt a blow with the news that Mick Daly is to leave the club. Hours after being voted Player of the Year by the Drogheda United fans, edging out Alan McNally and Ryan Brennan, Daly confirmed that he would be emigrating to Australia to seek a full time team and would play no further part with the club.

The midfielder has remained in contact with former Drog Shane Robinson, who now plies his trade in Australia, and there is a chance he could sign for Robinson’s club.

Former Man City trialist, Daly signed with Drogheda from local rivals Dundalk and despite a somewhat unassuming start to the season, which can be attributed to being played out of position, Daly quickly became a staple member of the Drogheda squad.

The Boynesiders who were relegated only three years after winning the top division now face a possible mass exodus with several players in discussions with the club over their future as an operating budget for 2011 has yet to be produced.

Speaking after their loss to Shamrock Rovers two weeks ago, the game which confirmed Drogheda’s relegation, Alan McNally stated that he would be considering his options as he does not want to play in the First Division. The central defender said that “no player wants to play in the First Division, everyone wants to play at the top level of football.”
