Newport County has signed experienced goalkeeper Jonny Maxted for the upcoming campaign, subject to EFL approval.

The 29-year-old comes in as a replacement for long-standing goalkeeper Joe Day, who recently moved to Woking on loan.

Maxted has an impressive resume that includes two promotions from League One and League Two.

His professional journey began at Doncaster Rovers, after which he played for Hartlepool, Forest Green Rovers, Guiseley, Accrington Stanley, and Exeter City.

During his time at Exeter City, he was nominated for January’s 2020 EFL League Two player of the month award after four consecutive clean sheets.

Following 26 appearances for the Grecians between 2019 and 2021, he made the switch to Northampton Town.

Graham Coughlan, Newport County's boss, expressed his enthusiasm for Maxted's arrival: “Jonny came in a month ago and played for us in our friendly fixture against Pontypridd. Jonny has also been training with us and has fit in really well. He’s an experienced goalkeeper and has been in successful training rooms, such as recently promoted Northampton. Jonny will challenge Nick, for the number one jersey in the upcoming season.”

Maxted also shared his excitement about becoming an Exile: “I’m buzzing to get into the new season. The boys have been great with me, so I’ll fit in right away and I’m looking forward to hit the ground running.”
