Hull City's captain, Lewie Coyle, has signed a new three-year contract with his hometown club.

The agreement extends the original one-year deal, offering the option of an additional year.

The 27-year-old right-back, originally from Hull, has chalked up a notable 100 appearances for the Tigers since his move from Fleetwood Town in August 2020.

His inaugural season was particularly impressive, with 34 appearances that aided City's climb to become League One champions.

His performances didn't go unnoticed; he was chosen as part of the PFA Team of the Year, and filled the captain's role during Richie Smallwood’s absence.

Coyle's last-minute long-range goal in the EFL Trophy match against his former club Fleetwood turned the tide in a thrilling 3-2 victory, and it won Hull City's 2020/21 Goal of the Season prize.

The full-back helped Hull City to secure its position back in the second tier. In the following season, Coyle played 23 matches and scored a decisive goal in a crucial 2-1 victory over Cardiff City, ensuring the Tigers' survival.

Coyle was named team captain for the 2022/23 campaign, during which he hit his 100-game milestone in the final match against Luton Town, marking his 43rd outing that season.

Hull City's head coach, Liam Rosenior, expressed his delight at the contract extension.

He lauded Coyle's performances and his role in the dressing room, describing him as a "great role model and leader."

Rosenior highlighted Coyle's resilience, stating he "played through the pain barrier last season" and praised his work ethic and continuous improvement on a technical level.

Rosenior further highlighted Coyle's potential and capabilities, stating, "He's an outstanding defender who enjoys one-v-one defending, plays with energy, gets forward and can deliver a final ball and cross. He’s still got so much potential."

“We want competition and in Lewie and Cyrus Christie, we have two top players who will be fighting it out for that right-back position,” he concluded.
