Golden Boot race draws to a close

Shamrock Rovers' Gary Twigg and Sporting Fingal's Conan Byrne look set to be crowned as their respective division's leading goalscorer, but may yet need to add to their impressive totals to guarantee their positions as the League of Ireland season draws to a close over the next few days.

Twigg is three clear of Bohemians' Jason Byrne with 24 goals to his name, but given that the "champions" will be in party mood at the Carlisle Grounds, who is to say they will not run riot against the Seagulls and try and augment the Tallaght native's total. This certainly seemed to be the case last week when Joseph N'do turned down a clear-cut shooting chance in favour of seeking out Byrne.

Fingal's Byrne main rivals are Waterford United's Graham Cummins and Monaghan United's Karl Bermingham. Bermingham would appear the most likely threat, having netted five in his last two games, and also has the advantage of an extra game, the postponed fixture with Wexford Youths, in which to add to his tally. Shelbourne could rack up a few goals against Kildare County, but their top scorer Dave McAllister is four back and would need a mammoth effort to surpass Byrne, a fellow nominee for the First Division Player of the Year Award.
