Athlone Town make five additions to squad

Athlone Town have announced the signings of former player Marco Chindea as well as Simon Dixon, Calvin Douglas, Kevin Farragher and Ross Purdy from junior and intermediate football.

Marco Chindea signed for Athlone ahead of the last year’s First Division campaign from St. Patrick’s Athletic, whose youth sides he progressed through.

The wideman scored twice on his debut for the club as the Midlanders beat Cobh Ramblers 4-0 in their second league game. He scored another in a 1-0 win over Finn Harps in May before injury disrupted his season and he finished the year with fifteen league appearances.

Just after the season finished, the former Waterford United loanee joined AUL Premier B side Real Transylvania in November 2015 before joining up with the PFAI squad for their FifPro tournament in Norway this January.

Simon Dixon and Calvin Douglas are also signing from the AUL, having been with O’Devaney Dunard before they pulled out of the league recently.

Dixon was with Shelbourne in the First Division last year, appearing on the bench towards the end of the season after returning from injury, before signing for O’Devaney Dunard when Dave Scully took over as manager in December 2015.

However, a poor run of results saw Scully leave the club at the start of January and the club pulled out of the league soon after.

Defender Calvin Douglas had been with the club since the start of the 2015/16 season. Ross Purdy had faced O’Devaney Duanrd this season as he also joins the above players in joining Athlone Town from an AUL side, with Ross signing on from Premier A side Sandyhill/Shangan FC.

Defender Kevin Farragher joins the club from Leinster Senior League Senior Sunday side Malahide United, having only joined the LSL side in the summer of 2015.

He has League of Ireland experience having been on loan briefly for Athlone Town from Saint Patrick’s Athletic during the 2013 season. He left St Pats in mid-2013 after two years with the club.
