Schlingermann signs for Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers have announced the signing of ex- Drogheda United goalkeeper Michael Schlingermann.

Schlingermann returns to the club having left in 2009 after making just one appearance for the Bit O'Red under then manager Paul Cook.

Since leaving the Showgrounds, Schlingermann has gone on to become one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the league earning his stripes with Athlone Town and most recently Drogheda United.

Speaking about coming back to sign for his previous employer said, “I am delighted to be signing with Rovers. Last season was disappointing for me so I was looking to get sorted as soon as possible.

“As soon as Dave rang me I got excited about coming here. It’s coming back home and to a big club in Sligo Rovers so it’s great. I was here when I was 17 and I made my debut under Paul Cook. It was then that I built a hunger to play football because I had been playing GAA as well up until then.

“My time here was a big part of the decision to stick with football and it’s worked out really well for me. After leaving I went to Athlone, initially it was just to be for a year and come back but it went so well and I became number one so I stayed. From there I worked my way up the league and I had two and a half great seasons with Drogheda. But it’s time to come home.”

Schlingermann becomes the fourth player to commit to the Bit O'Red for the 2016 season after John Russell, Gary Boylan and Regan Donelon already signed on the dotted line earlier this year. Schlingermann will be officially unveiled to the fans next Thursday.
