Drogheda United picked up their first piece of silverware under new manager Alan Matthews on Tuesday night, with a penalty shoot-out victory over local rivals Dundalk at United Park in the Jim Malone Cup.

After a goalless 90 minutes, former Dundalk player Jamie Duffy fired the winning penalty past Lillywhites keeper Chris Bennion to seal a 4-3 shootout victory for Drogheda. The game saw Drogheda's Gavin Whelan and Dundalk's Michael Collins both red-carded during the first half. The sending off caps what has been a controversial start at Dundalk for Collins after Dundalk boss Sean Connor was asked to substitute the player in the club's previous pre-season match, otherwise the referee intended to send him off.

Elsewhere on the night, a more timid encounter took place at Finn Park with Finn Harps holding local rivals Derry City to a scoreless draw. The game saw new signing David Scullion make his first appearance for Derry since signing from Glentoran on Monday.

Meanwhile, Shamrock Rovers overcame Glebe North at the Leinster Senior League side's ground in Market Green, Balbriggan with a late strike from Eric McGill giving Michael O'Neill's men a 1-0 victory.

In the night's other game, goals from Emeka Onwubiko and Kevin Williamson gave Athlone Town a 2-1 victory over Tullamore Town.

Tonight sees Shelbourne travel to Newbridge to take on Kildare County at Station Road (kick-off 7:30pm).
