German and Borussia Dortmund ace Marco Reus will miss the World Cup in Brazil after he was carried off in Germany’s 6-1 win over Armenia on Friday night.

The German midfielder who is a target for Manchester United limped off after landing awkwardly on his ankle and was withdrawn immediately and taken to hospital for a scan.

The German FA (DFB) today confirmed that the 25-year old will miss the World Cup much to the shock of German football fans who would have seen Reus as the jewel in the crown of the strong German midfield going to Brazil this summer.

The BVB midfielder Reus is expected to be out of action for six to seven weeks. The Germans had already lost defensive midfielder Lars Bender to a thigh injury during a pre-world cup training camp.

German boss Joachim Low has called up Sampdoria’s Schodran Mustafi as a replacement for the injured Reus. Mustafi was once at Everton but David Moyes let the defender go on a free transfer to Serie A club Sampdoria in 2012. He has two U21 caps and won the European U17 championship with Germany in 2009.

Germany kick off their 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign against Portugal on June 16th.
