Stephanie Roche Goal - The World Reacts - Passes 1 million views

UPDATE: The orginal Youtube Video clip has now passed 1,000,000 views. The reaction to the goal just continues to grow and grow

In a few days dominated by wonder goals, Stephanie Roche of Peamount United undoubtedly scored the pick of the lot.

An elegant team goal? No. A run in which the player beat six opposing defenders? Not even close.

The Irish international’s goal against Wexford Youths last Sunday in the Women’s National League, was one to savour as she controlled a cross, flicked the ball over her head and fired in a volley from 20 yards out. If there was one word that could describe the goal – it would be simply ‘WOW’.

Since uploaded on Saturday by Peamount manager Eileen Gleeson, the video of Roche’s strike has gone viral, amassing over 600,000 hits on YouTube.

Indeed, there has also been huge reaction Twitter, with people such as Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier, Hull City duo David Meyler and Sone Aluko, US Women’s National Team forward Abby Wambach and Irish comedian Dara O’Briain all stating their admiration for the goal.

In fact, Le Tissier even went as far as declaring it as ‘The Goal of the Season’ on the social networking site - a mean feat during a weekend where wonder goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jack Wilshere, Edison Cavani and former Derry City star Paddy McCourt had been scored.

The Daily Telegraph also picked up on the goal, saying: “It's been quite a weekend for goals. But nothing - nothing - beats this”, as well as The Mirror, ESPN, ITV and Sky Bet picking up on it.

The goal not only elevated Roche herself into celebrity status, but it also saw the Women’s National League trend on Twitter on Saturday evening. Peamount United later followed.

Radio appearances have followed for the Irish international, and a quick Google search shows that her goal really has taken the internet by storm.

In the meantime Peamount United defeated Galway WFC 5-2 on Sunday and Roche netted herself two more goals

And in case you are living under a rock here it is again…
