Bohemians 1 - 2 Cork City

Cork City again came from behind against Bohemians to secure their second away win of the campaign.

The home side had led through an own goal from Colin Healy, but goals in either half by Denis Behan and Danny Morrissey saw the Munster men come out on top.

Bohs made three changes from the side that lost to UCD on Tuesday night with Stephen Traynor, Karl Moore and Dave Scully replacing Roberto Lopes, Dwayne Wilson and the suspended Keith Buckley. The visitors made two changes with John Dunleavy and Kalen Spillane replacing Dan Murray and Darren Dennehy who misses out through suspension.

The first chance of the game fell to the visitors, Ryan McEvoy failed to clear a Gearóid Morrissey cross, the ball found its way to Danny Morrissey whose pass was volleyed by Denis Behan straight at Dean Delany.

Bohs responded immediately and nearly scored when good work up the left saw Chris Lyons played through, he spun the last defender before firing a left footed shot into the side netting from a difficult angle.

The Gypsies again threatened soon after when McEvoy found himself in acres of space ten yards out, but the Bohs midfielder could only glance Moore’s header wide of Mark McNulty’s right hand post.

The home side had an appeal for a penalty midway through the half, Heary and Healy went up for a McEvoy corner and it appeared that the Cork captain may have handled the ball. Not so according to referee Paul Tuite, a let off for Tommy Dunne’s side.

Bohs got their breakthrough on 35 minutes, a Stephen Traynor corner was diverted acrobatically into his own net by Colin Healy who was only ensuring the inevitable as Owen Heary lay in wait inside the six yard box.

The Leesiders could have been level three minutes later when Luke Byrne failed to clear his lines, Danny Morrissey’s snapshot from 18 yards cannoned off the side netting for what would have been a spectacular goal.

Healy made some attempt to redeem himself on 40 minutes, a scuffed McEvoy shot found a suspiciously offside Lyons but with no flag being raised his goalbound shot was excellently blocked by the Cork captain.

Cork were level four minutes later, Gearóid Morrissey played a neat one two with Behan before being clipped by Heary in the area. This time Tuite pointed to the spot and Behan made no mistake, firing his effort straight down the middle to make it 1-1.

Tommy Dunne’s side could have lead at the interval had Danny Murphy’s effort found it’s way inside Delany’s post on 45 minutes.

After a quiet opening to the second half Bohs came to life on 55 minutes, good work up the left from Byrne led to a forced Gearóid Morrissey clearance which found Traynor on the edge of the box, his shot was well saved low by McNulty.

The home side were beginning to dominate and had chances through a Mulcahy shot and a Karl Moore free-kick  on 57 minutes which went over the wall but also over the bar.

Bohs almost reaped the benefits of their pressure on 71 minutes when McNulty saved brilliantly from a Scully flick after a fine Luke Byrne cross. Heary almost seized the initiative when he got on the end of a McEvoy knockdown, his shot was blocked and cleared to safety.

Cork were under pressure but had two chances of their own on 79 minutes, both falling to Danny Morrissey. Duggan broke up the lap and with 2 on 1 drew the last man to feed Morrissey whose shot from ten yards was tame and straight at replacement keeper Greg Murray. Moments later Morrissey was put through but with the goal gaping blazed over.

But persistence will always prevail and two minutes later after good work on the left wing by Danny Murphy and Daryl Kavanagh the latter’s cross was met at the near post by Danny Morrissey who flicked home from 6 yards.

The home sides attempts for an equaliser were limited to a McEvoy shot from distance and an injury time bombardment which was well dealt with by the Cork rear guard.
