Stephen spent time with Coventry City as a youth before signing for St. Patrick’s Athletic in 2003. He spent four years with the Saints and was involved in their League Cup success of 2003 before winning the club’s young player of the year award in 2005.

In July 2007 he signed for John Gill at Dundalk and made 13 league appearances for the Lilywhites in the latter half of '07 but was released at the end of the season. In December '07 he was signed by Gareth Cronin at Waterford United where he made 27 league appearances in their 2008 First Division season. In February 2009 he signed for Shelbourne and made 47 league appearances over the following two seasons at Tolka Park.

The Dublin born player moved to Drogheda in 2011 and made his League debut for Mick Cooke’s side in the 1-0 defeat against UCD on March 4th 2011, going on to captain the side against UCD in a 5-4 defeat in the league on September 3rd. Throughout 2011 Stephen made 28 appearances for the Drogs. The following season Stephen made 15 league appearances and in 2013 he appeared in just 6 league games, though he did score in an FAI Cup win over Bohemians.

Stephen left Drogheda in July 2013 and signed for Bray Wanderers on 25th of that same month. His competitive debut for the Seagulls came in a 2-0 defeat away to Sligo Rovers on 10 August and he made 2 league appearances for the club. His stay at the Carlisle Grounds was brief and he was not part of new manager Alan Mathew's 2014 Bray squad.

Instead, Stephen signed for his former Drogheda manager Mick Cooke at Athlone Town on 3 April 2014 and made his debut against Drogheda in a 3-2 defeat at United Park on the next day. He went on to make eleven more appearances for Athlone before an injury in July kept him out for the rest of the season. He retired in October 2014.

However his retirement was brief and he returned to re-sign for Athlone Town for the 2015 season in January 2015. He made twelve league appearances for the club before leaving in July 2015.
