Niall started his career at Irish League side Dungannon Swifts where he was top scorer for the reserve side in 2005/06 season. He signed a two year professional contract with the club in 2006 and made 42 league appearances in his time at the club.

In January 2008 Niall signed for Stephen Kenny at Derry City. He spent one year at the Brandywell, scoring six times in 31 league appearances before a move to Scottish giants Celtic in January 2009. Niall made 28 league appearances in three and a half seasons at Parkhead. He moved on in July 2012 when he signed for SPL side Aberdeen. He has since nearly scored fifty goals in just under one hundred and fifty league appearances

Niall was playing with Aberdeen when he was included in Northern Ireland's squad for the 2016 European Championship.
