Michael began his career in 1994 with Cliftonville before going to England where he played with Sheffield United and Darlington. Having made just one league appearance during his time in England, Michael returned to Belfast for a second spell at Cliftonville in 1996.

Michael made 139 league appearances at Cliftonville over the next five years though his time at the club ended in controversial circumstances after he was sent off in an Intertoto Cup tie. His next port of call was Portadown where he signed in 2001. He made another 139 league appearances over six years.

In December 2007 Michael signed for Newry City where he spent just over a year, leaving at the end of his contract in February 2009.

Having signed for Dundalk at the start of the 2009 season, michael failed to get international clearance and had to wait until July to make his debut for the club. He first played in a 1-0 win over Derry City at Oriel Park on July 3rd and went on to make 10 league appearances, scoring two goals.

He was released by Dundalk at the end of the 2009 season and signed for Cliftonville for a third spell at the start of their 2009/10 season. He made a further 7 league appearances for the Solitude club before his contract was terminated and he retired from professional football.
