Des’s Biography

Des played underage football with Ballinasloe Town before joining Mervue United. He then joined Athlone Town in 2000/01 and played with the club's U21 side that year. He made 1 league appearance in 2001/02 and added 8 more the following season.

It was in the transitional 2003 season that Des became a regular in the Athlone side and he made over 20 league appearances in each of the next four seasons. He missed the bulk of 2007 through injury but reclaimed his role at centre back in 2008, continuing at the heart of the Athlone defence until the end of 2010 when he left to join midlands rivals Longford Town.

Des signed for Tony Cousins at Longford Town at the start of 2011 and made his debut against Shelbourne on the opening night of the season. he made 26 league appearances that year, scoring once. On his first appearance of 2012 Des scored twice in a 3-2 win over Waterford United at Flancare Park and went on to record 17 league appearances, while 2013 was a year disrupted by injury and Des played just 10 times in the league as Longford missed out on promotion in the end of season play-offs.

In January 2014 Des announced his retirement from League of Ireland football. He did stay active in the game, playing for Ballinasloe Town as well as representing the Roscommon & District League.
