Gavin’s Biography

Gavin began his career at Blackburn Rovers before moving to Mansfield Town in June 2005. He made his league debut in a 2-2 draw with Stockport County on the opening day of the 2005/06 season and made 13 league appearances for the Stags before returning to Ireland over the Christmas period. In February 2006 Sean Connor brought Gavin to Sligo Rovers following the club's promotion to the Premier Division at the end of the previous season.

In his debut season at The Showgrounds Gavin played at full back as Sligo finished fifth in the league, but in 2007 he made the switch to centre back. In 2009 Gavin played in the first of four FAI Cup finals when Sligo lost out 2-1 to Sporting Fingal at Tallaght Stadium. The following year he won his first winner's medal as the Bit O' Red beat Shamrock Rovers in a penalty shootout at the Aviva Stadium, also picking up a League Cup winner's medal when Sligo beat Monaghan United in the final. In 2011 Gavin experienced another FAI Cup triumph after another successful shootout, this time against Shelbourne when the final finished 1-1 after extra-time.

In 2012 Gavin scored four times in 28 league appearances as Sligo won the League title under new manager Ian Baraclough and he collected a hat-trick of FAI Cup wins in 2013 when Sligo defeated Drogheda United 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Aviva. A knee injury kept him out of the start of the 2014 season but he returned to make 11 league appearances as Sligo finished fifth in the Premier Division table.

Gavin made a further 27 league appearances for the Bit O'Red in 2015, scoring once in a 3-2 loss to Drogheda United, as Sligo finished ninth in the Premier Division. He re-signed for his eleventh season at Sligo in February 2016 and added another 18 league appearances to his career total before announcing that he was leaving Sligo Rovers to sign for Liam Buckley at St Patrick's Athletic in November 2016 with the defender saying that family reasons were behind his decision.

Gavin signed for Derry City before the start of the 2018 campaign but he lasted just one campaign at the Brandywell before departing at the end of the season.

In August 2020, Gavin signed for Warrenpoint.

Gavin has been capped for Ireland at under-age and U23 levels and was chosen to represent the league in the summer of 2010 against a Manchester United XI at the Aviva Stadium.
