Ben’s Biography

Ben is a central defender who can also play in the centre of midfield. After spending time at LSL sides Lusk United and Whitehall Rangers, Ben began his League of Ireland career with Kilkenny City in 2000 after being signed by John Gill, who was at the time assistant manager to Billy Walsh with the Cats. An impressive spell there saw Whelehan move to newly-formed Kildare County the following year, before he transferred to Gill’s Dublin City in 2004.

In the Vikings' first season back in the Premier Division, however, things didn’t go to plan, as Gill stood down in mid-season, leaving the way for Roddy Collins to take over. Upon Collins’ arrival, he placed fourteen players on the transfer list, including Whelehan.

According to Whelehan, “it was the best thing (Collins) ever done”, as the defender moved to Waterford United, where he helped the Blues to the FAI Cup final, as well as to fifth position in the top flight table. Due to work commitments and travel constraints, Whelehan returned to Dublin City in 2005 and achieved promotion under Dermot Keely, before another season in the Premier Division with the Vikings again ended prematurely as this time the club ceased to trade in midseason.

Ben then chose to take a long break from football, before, after seven months out, he returned to Dundalk in January 2007. He made his competitive debut for the club in a 3-2 home win over Finn Harps on 8 March 2008. However, another disappointing campaign for the Dubliner came to an end after just eleven appearances, as, in May, he suffered a serious knee injury which kept him out for the remainder of the season. Whelehan battled back, however, and returned to full fitness for the beginning of 2008.
