Philip’s Biography
Philip Hughes started out at Tolka Rovers in 1999 and had a short spell at St Francis before signing for St Patrick's Athletic in 2001. In the 01/02 season he went on loan to Kilkenny City where he scored 15 goals in 20 league appearances and early in 2003 he joined Kildare County for the first 'Summer season'.
In 2004 he signed for Dublin City but was released mid-season by new manager Roddy Collins. He spent the remainder of '04 at UCD before moving to Monaghan United for 2005. One year later he was on the move again, signing for Dundalk at the start of 2006. He spent two years at Oriel Park scoring 27 goals in 63 appearances.
In 2008 there was a move to Shelbourne which didn't work out and he returned to Kildare County in the summer transfer window. 2009 saw Philly move back to the Leinster Senior League with Phoenix FC but in June of that year he returned, once again, to Kildare County where he scored seven times in 19 appearances. Kildare folded on the final day of the '09 season and Philly found himself on the move again.
He spent 2010 at Monaghan United under Mick Cooke, scoring an impressive 22 league and Cup goals. In January 2011 he returned to Shelbourne, this time signing for Alan Mathews, and his 20 league goals, in 30 appearances, helped the Reds to promotion from the First Division. Philly also scored in the FAI Cup final as Shels drew 1-1 with Sligo Rovers before losing in a penalty shootout.
On Shels' return to the Ptemier Division Philly scored eleven times in 28 league appearances but in 2013, without having scored in 17 league outings, he signed a loan deal at St Patrick's Athletic on 1 July. He made his Pats debut on 4 July as a late sub against Zalgiris Vilnius of Lithuania in the Europa League but that was to be his only appearance for the club.
On 4 December 2013 Philly signed for Robbie Horgan at Drogheda United. He had a dramatic introduction to life at United Park getting sent off from the bench in the season opener against Dundalk. He made his debut for the Drogs against Bray Wanderers on 11 April and made 8 league appearances, scoring once, before moving to Bray Wanderers on 18 July 2014 where he made a further 10 league appearances (eight as substitute) over the latter half of 2014.
In December 2014, Philly re-joined Shelbourne for the third time in his career. He went on to finish as the joint-highest goalscorer at the club with seven goals in twenty-five league games as Shelbourne finished fourth in the 2015 First Division table. In December 2015, Philly joined St Mochtas in the LSL.
