Alan’s Biography
After spells with local clubs Mervue United and St. Bernard's, Alan began his League of Ireland career at Galway United in 2005. While essentially a full back, Alan also featured at centre back for the 'Tribesmen', making his debut in that position towards the end of the 2005 season. In four years at Terryland Park he made 54 league appearances and scored two league goals.
In February 2009 Alan signed for Paul Cook at Sligo Rovers. He quickly stepped into the shoes vacated by Seamus Coleman at right back and instantly won over the fans of the Bit O' Red. Keane became the club's penalty taker and proceeded to participate in 3 successive FAI Cup finals, losing one - against Sporting Fingal in 2009 - and winning two, scoring and missing penalties in the shootouts of 2010 and 2011 respectively.
In 2012 Alan made a further 17 league appearances for the Bit O' Red as they clinched their first league title since 1977, and in 2013 he missed just one of Sligo's 33 league games while also collecting his third FAI Cup winner's medal as the Bit O' Red beat Drogheda United 3-2 in the final at the Aviva Stadium.
Injuries restriced Alan to 19 league appearances for Sligo during the 2014 season as they finished fifth in the league table. In 2015, his seventh season at the club, this time under new manager Owen Heary. He went on make 32 league appearances for the Bit O'Red, scoring once in a 2-2 draw with Dundalk, as Sligo finished ninth in the Premier Division.
Alan retired after the completion of the 2015 season. However, in August 2016, Alan returned to League of Ireland football when he signed for Stephen Kenny's Dundalk. His first league appearance that year came in the crucial 2-1 win over Cork City on 11 October, and he had 5 league outings as Dundalk lifted their third successive league trophy. He also took part in his fifth FAI Cup final, being an unused substitute as the Lilywhites lost out to Cork City after extra-time.
In January 2017 Alan moved north of the border to sign for Crusaders.
