Clive is a defender who started his career at UCD in 1998. He made 146 league appearances in five seasons with the 'Students' before having a brief spell at West Ham United in 2003. He soon returned to the League of Ireland, signing for St Patrick's Athletic in 2003.

Clive soon joined Derry City in 2004, having been signed by Gavin Dykes. Two years and 48 league appearances later, new Manager Pat Fenlon released Delaney in December 2006 and he signed for Bray Wanderers a couple of days after Christmas.

After spending two seasons with the Seagulls Clive rejoined Derry on the last day of transfer action in February 2008, and he enjoyed another two seasons at the Brandywell before quitting the club at the end of 2009.
