James’s Biography

James is a goalkeeper who served his apprenticeship at Glasgow Celtic before signing for St Patricks Athletic on his return from Scotland. He found it hard to establish himself in the Pats line up but did win a League Cup Winners Medal with the Saints in 2003.

He returned to his native Donegal at the end of the 2003 season and was signed by Noel King at Finn Harps. James made his debut on the opening night of the 2004 season in a 2-1 defeat to Kilkenny City at Buckley Park and went on to be an ever present for Harps as they won the First Division title. James spent much of the 2005 season on loan with Dublin City where he picked up a First Division runners-up medal. Back at Harps, James replaced Gavin Cullen as first choice keeper in the 2006 season.

In May 2009 Finn Harps boss Paul Hegarty quit and James took over the role on a temporary basis. He was confirmed as permanent boss in October and continued to make appearances as a goalkeeper through the 2009 and 2010 seasons. After a poor start to the 2011 season James was sacked by the Harps board and replaced by Peter Hutton and Felix Healy.

In 2013 James joined Derry City as part of the coaching team. He also provided goalkeeping cover for first choice netminder Ger Doherty until Eugene Ferry returned to the club in July 2013. James left Derry at the end of the 2013 season and took up a coaching role at Finn Harps for 2014. He became assistant manager at the club and also re-signed as a back-up goalkeeper for the 2015 season with Finn Harps. He didn't make an appearance but was included on the bench quite often.

In December 2015, James left his role as assistant manager at Finn Harps due to personal reasons.
