Capped at U17 level for the Republic of Ireland, Ray played with local Cork sides Kilreen Celtic and College Corinthians before linking up with Cork City in 2005. He spent three seasons with the club, operating from left back or left midfield. Ray played some of the 2008 pre-season at Cork City but left to join newly promoted Cobh Ramblers prior to the start of 2008.

Ray made his Ramblers debut against Finn Harps on the opening night of the 2008 season and made 12 league appearances that year. It would prove to be the club's last year of league football as they were denied a license for 2009. Ray went on to emigrate and play football in Australia.

In August 2013 Ray returned to Cork City colours in a friendly against WBA but he joined MSL side Avondale United at the start of the 2013/14 season.
