Evan began his career at UCD in 2006 and was part of the Irish Colleges team that travelled to Thailand in the summer of 2007, where he was the top scorer for his country with two goals. By 2009 Evan was a first choice defender in the UCD side that lifted the First Division title and in 2010 Evan played 35 of UCD's 36 Premier Division games. By the time Evan left Belfield at the end of the 2010 season he had made 93 league appearances for the Students.
In January of 2011 he was snapped up by his former boss, Pete Mahon, for St Patrick's Athletic. Evan scored four goals in his debut season at Richmond Park and finished 2011 with another 34 league appearances added to his career total.
The start of 2012 saw Evan move across the city to sign for Aaron Callaghan at Bohemians. He made his debut for the Gypsies in a 1-0 defeat away to Derry City on the opening night of the 2012 season and made 28 league appearances. He was chiefly employed in his regular position of centre back but was pressed forwards in response to Bohs' difficulties in front of goal and hit the net eight times. It was a barn storming season for Evan and he attracted interest from England and Scotland over the close season, but signed for Ian Baraclough at Sligo Rovers on 17 January 2013.
Evan made his debut for Sligo in a 1-0 win over Derry City at the Brandywell on the opening night of the 2013 season and scored twice in 24 league appearances that year. He also won an FAI Cup winner's medal when he came on as a substitute in the final which Sligo won 3-2 against Drogheda United.2014 saw Evan notch four league goals from 30 league appearances but he left Sligo at the end of that season to return to UCD where he took on the role of player/coach under new manager Colin O'Neill.
It was later revealed that McMillan would only be taking on the coaching role in UCD.
