John is a Liverpool born player who started his career with Crewe Alexandra in 2006. In four seasons at Gresty Road he never made the breakthrough to the first team and in January 2010 he signed for Paul Cook at Sligo Rovers

He made his debut for Sligo in the 1-0 win over Derry City at the Brandywell on 4 March 2010 and made 28 league appearances in his first season at the club, scoring twice. He also picked up an FAI Cup winners medal as Sligo beat Shamrock Rovers in the final after a penalty shootout.

In 2011 John scored seven league goals in 29 appearances as Sligo finished second in the Premier Division, and added a second FAI Cup medal to his collection as the Bit O' Red defeated Shelbourne in the final, again winning on penalties. John's third season at Sligo saw reduced opportunities and he made just 8 league starts, adding 10 more appearances from the bench, before being released at the end of 2012.

He scored five goals (three from the penalty spot) in 29 league appearances as Dundalk finished second to League champions t Patrick's Athletic. John left Dundalk at the end of the 2013 season.
