Tom played underage football with Mayo side Castlebar Celtic before making the move to England where he began his professional career at Plymouth Argyle in 2006. He spent two years in Plymouth's youth system before returning to Ireland where he re-joined Castlebar in the summer of '08.

He soon moved on from his home town club, signing for Sligo Rovers is September of 2008 where he played out the remainder of that season with Sligo's A Championship side.

He signed for Longford Town in 2009 where he made his league debut as a late substitute against Monaghan United on the opening day of the season. He went on to make 32 league appearances that year and was voted the club's Player of the Year.

Tom moved to Galway United in 2010 and made 26 league appearances for the Tribesmen, scoring once, in the 2-2 draw with Bohemians in June 2010.

In February 2011 Tom signed for Johnny Glynn at Mervue United. He made a goal-scoring debut for Mervue against local rivals Salthill Devon in a 2-1 win on the opening night of the season.
