John played underage football with Kingdom Boys in his native Kerry and with Belvedere in Dublin before joining the underage set up at Cork City. He made his senior debut for Cork City as a substitute in the 2-0 Setanta Cup win against Cliftonville at Solitude on 1 September 2008.

John left Cork City to join UCD on a scholarship in 2009 UCD and was part of the squad that lifted the First Division title that year. In March 2010 he returned to Cork, signing for Tommy Dunne at Cork City Foras Co-op.

In February 2018, John returned to the League of Ireland when he signed with Cobh Ramblers.
