Colm first signed for Bray Wanderers in 1990, joining from St Joseph's Boys. He spent two years at the Carlisle Grounds and made 36 appearances for the club, scoring three times, before moving on to Drogheda United in 1992.

Colm spent five seasons at United Park, making 148 league appearances and bagging 20 goals. He left Drogheda in the summer of 1997 to move north of the border where he joined Portadown. In the summer of 1998 Colm rejoined Bray Wanderers.

In his second spell at the club Colm made 153 appearances over five seasons, winning an FAI Cup winners medal in 1999 when Bray eventually defeated Finn Harps after two replays. Colm added a First Division title medal in 2000 and won the club's Player of the Year award three years in a row from 1998/99 to 2000/01.

Another brief spell at Portadown followed in January 2003 when Colm went on a two month loan to the Irish League club. He made just 3 appearances for the Ports and was back to Bray at the end of March, making 26 league appearances in 2003 as the League of Ireland switched to a summer season. Colm also made his 200th league appearance for Bray Wanderers that year in a game against Finn Harps in August.

Colm won two more Player of the Year awards at Bray, in 2005 and 2006, and by the end of 2011 Colm had completed an incredible 16 seasons at the Carlisle Grounds. Despite rumours of his retirement having become an annual event, Colm did announce an end to his playing days at the end of the 2011 season. However, he was persuaded to return for yet another year in January 2012. However, having appeared in Bray's final game of the 2012 league season, Colm did finally hang up his boots at the end of the 2012 season with a grand total of 441 appearances for the Seagulls under his belt.
